CHAMP: We got the brain child of Hippo Esthetics. How are you doing homey?

HIPPO ESTHETICS: What up! It’s TNES owner/designer here along w/ Rubix the head of production from HIPPOE. We doing good bro, thanks so much for the opportunity.

 

CHAMP: Off the bat how did you get into designing clothes and what

 

HIPPO ESTHETICS: (TNES) I’ve always been a stylish cat always trying to dress different you know. At one point I realized why am I spending all my loot on other peoples product when I have the talent to design and rock my own? What really motivated me is the response I get from people when they dig a design. It makes me wanna keep on doing what I do and constantly strive to do better.

 

CHAMP: How long have you been designing clothes for?

HIPPO ESTHETICS: (TNES) I’d say a good 8 years… always been into fashion and art, but decided to dabble in it back in 2002.
CHAMP: Where are you guys based out of?

 
HIPPO ESTHETICS: (Rubix) We’re based outta Sin City Las Vegas baby! We originated in Hawaii where TNES and I are from.

CHAMP: In terms of designs and artistic direction for Hippo Esthetics,

 

HIPPO ESTHETICS: (TNES) We all throw around ideas but ultimately I decide how we go about the actual design. I’m real picky when it comes to what goes on our garments haha.

 

CHAMP: Are the designs made in house or overseas?

HIPPO ESTHETICS: (Rubix) I handle all the production in house. As soon as TNES preps the artwork I’m on it w/ the silk screening and sewing. We like to be in control of everything… I’m sure we’ll eventually need to contract out, but right now we good haha.

 

CHAMP: How many pieces do you guys produce a year?

HIPPO ESTHETICS: (TNES) Good question! I’d like to know that as well LOL. I can’t really pin point it. Sometimes I’ll be on a roll w/ the designing and we’ll push out like six new designs in a month, then hit you w/ another 2 or 3 the next week! We consider everything art, even when it comes to Rubix and the silk screening. We like to see things as our customer not rockin’ a tee that was mass produced in China or something, but a tee that was made w/ heart and soul directly from US to YOU.

CHAMP: Who are some celebs you guys caught wearing your stuff or that youguys endorse?

HIPPO ESTHETICS: (TNES & Rubix) Straight up the homie TASH from Tha Alkaholiks rocks HIPPOE like no other! (www.Alkaholiks.com) We got Ebrahim out in your neck of the woods (www.eebmusic.com), The Aztext out in Vermont (www.facebook.com/TheAztext), dope producer Dub Sonata from the Bronx (www.DubSonata.com), The Far-East Movement out in Los Angeles (www.FarEastMovement.com), Malcom & Martin from Cali as well and more. If I forgot ya’ll, my bad!

CHAMP: Who do you think in the game has their swag or fashion sense up?

HIPPO ESTHETICS: (TNES) I think everyone is doing their thing as far as the street wear brands out there! I personally am into anything that looks dope… It could be a generic brand, but if I like it I like it ya know.

CHAMP: Who are some clothing brands on the come up or on the underground that you guys are feeling at the moment?

HIPPO ESTHETICS: (TNES & Rubix) Our boys from Deep Cover are the only ones besides us reppin’ right here in Vegas. Gotta shout out my boy Derrick from 9 Grand Clothing, they really got things going good for them right now. The homie Alert from XprMnt out in Hawaii doing his thing grass roots style the way we do. CHAMP: Are there any other areas of the fashion world you wanna explore?

HIPPO ESTHETICS: (TNES) I definitely wanna step out of just doing printed garments. Designing styles of clothing and not just altering them. We plan to become a full fledged apparel company.

CHAMP: Are there any exclusive Hippo Esthetics spots in Canada?

HIPPO ESTHETICS: (Rubix) Not as of yet. We’re mainly focusing on our online shop. We’ve been getting hit up my a lot of boutiques around the world, but wanna make sure we have all our nuts and bolts tightened up before committing to anyone.

CHAMP: What else can we expect from Hippo Esthetics in 2010?

HIPPO ESTHETICS: (TNES) Expect the unexpected bro! We’re gonna be real innovative this year trying to do shit that nobody has done yet. We gonna get the most out of a tee and a sweater ya feel me! We gonna be coming out w/ dope original urban toys and more dope art work from yours truly, and if you in the city of SIN – holla at us cause we throw the dopest true school Hip Hop parties in Las Vegas Nevada baby!
