CHAMP: If you can let the people know where you’re hailing from homey?
Yelawolf: It’s Yelawolf and I’m from Gadsden, Alabama a little small town east from Atlanata, west of Birmingham. Just dropped a mixtape called Trunk Muzik with DJ Burn One featuring Raekwon, Bun B, Diamond from Crime Mob, and my homey Rittz and shit man we’ve just been making some moves. Doing shows and grinding man.
CHAMP: Now a lot of people got introduced to you because of course you dropped the hook on “Mixing Up the Medicine” with Juelz Santana, but how long have you been actually making music for?
Yelawolf: I signed a deal in ’07 with Columbia/Ghettovision and we were at Columbia briefly and then we left Columbia and just went back Independent with Ghettovision. Professionally for the past three to four years.
CHAMP: When people take a look at you, they may not notice that you’re the same person that’s behind the mic. How often do you get the “You’re Yelawolf?!” kind of question when people first see you?
Yelawolf: Yeah I get that a lot. Maybe everyday especially since we did “I Run” with Slim Thug but I didn’t make that video for that particular record. People had no idea that was me on that record. Shit man, I’m just doing me.

CHAMP: Definitely. You’ve dropped some tapes. You dropped Trunk Muzik, Arena Rap, Stereo, Ball of Flames and Trunk Muzik’s the recent one you got right now?
Yelawolf: Yeah Trunk Muzik’s the latest mixtape we released but we shot a video for “Lick the Cat” with Diamond a couple days ago. We shot the “I Wish Remix” with Gangsta Pill and Prynce CyHi, so you got the visuals coming out real soon, on top of “Pop the Trunk”. Make sure you go check that out! It’s all over the web you can just google Yelawolf and then Pop the Trunk and check it out man. It’s a dope video and we’re proud of it.
CHAMP: In terms of the sound that people may compare you to, who are some comparisons you’ve been getting lately?
Yelawolf: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Outkast, that’s the most comparisons I get. Easiest way to describe it really. If you’ve never heard my music before, I derive a lot of melodys from classic rock and of course I get my flow from Outkast, UGK, NWA, Ice Cube, Run DMC, Beastie Boys.
CHAMP: A lot of people are hearing your joints and saying you’re in the running for new artist of the year for 2010? What can we expect in terms of like an album coming out from Yelawolf anytime soon?
Yelawolf: I’m sure it’s gonna be before the years up we’ve been working on the album for a long time now. Stacking records. We work real fast over here so there’s no telling where the album is gonna end up but we’re definitely trying to outdo Trump Muzik and come out with some real fire.
CHAMP: Do you have any plans of hitting up Toronto any time soon?
Yelawolf: My grind is to get up that way but hopefully we’ll make it before the year ends. Let’s go do a show let’s set it up man.
CHAMP: We can try and make something happen
Yelawolf: I’ve never been to Canada man I really wanna get up there.
