CHAMP: Kay Slay we want to talk about the album dropping “More Than Just a DJ.” How do you feel about the anticipation towards the album so far?

KAY SLAY: At the end of the day we had a real funny time when it comes to the music industry. I do this for all the real hip hop fans. If you ain’t a fan of hip hop and you are just in the culture to wear tight pants or do any kind of weird shit, or just to manipulate paper out the game, go on about your business this ain’t for you man. To all the true hip hop heads I’m showing them that real hip hop is still alive.

CHAMP: All the people who follow you from the Street Sweeper days, you always come with some timeless music. Going to the title “More Than Just a DJ” of course you wear many hats in this industry. If you could let the people know what you do other than just dj’ing.

KAY SLAY: Beside DJing I also have a magazine out called “Straight Stuntin” with all the beautiful models and ladies in there. I am also an A&R for Ray J. I came into the hip hop culture not only dj’ing but also a graphic artist. I got many talents and I do many things. I don’t just spin turn tables, that is one of the last things that I do. At this time and age there is a whole lot of other money out there.

CHAMP: We don’t get “Straight Stuntin” up here in Canada but definitely the man has ladies on that with booty and all other types of assets that you love, so definitely subscribe to that. In terms of the album I just wanted to get an idea of who we got featured, because it looks like we got a ton of guests on this album.

KAY SLAY: We got Busta Rhymes, G-Unit, Cam’ron, Trae da Truth, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Papoose Jim Jones, Maino, Jay Rock, OJ Da Juice Man, Yo Gotti, Webbie, Lil Boosie, Joell Ortiz, Saigon, Mike Beck, San Quinn I got a lot of brothers on there and it is a well rounded album. I can’t forget about my sister Remy Ma who is on lock down, keep your head up, she is definitely on there.

CHAMP: Free Remy for sure. In terms of the collaborations, because you listed a star studded cast right there, how hard is it to get artist to collaborate on one joint? Is it something where they are all sending their verses in or do you actually get everyone in the studio at once to lock down there verses?

KAY SLAY: At the end of the day you got to get people wherever you can get them at. Cats got busy schedules so on and so forth so I really just send out the instrumentals to them, tell them the concept and then wait for them to send it back. It’s just a coincidence when I am in the studio and artists are in town then yes I will get them together. It’s not a must that you get everyone in the studio at the same time, because everyone might not necessarily be in the same mind frame to work. When you want to go do something, you ready to go do it. I don’t want to call somebody in the studio but there heart ain’t all the way there because their got something else on their mind. So I send them the beat and when they feel up to it, then they are going to do what they do.

CHAMP: Who do we got on the production credits on the album?

KAY SLAY: I got Alchemist on there, DJ Green Lantern, Amadeus, The Dream Team. I got a lot of great producers on there.

CHAMP: I had read that you actually tried to get at the Toronto native Drake on that project as well, what was the situation with that?

KAY SLAY: In all actuality Drake had given the record. I had the record and what happened was the record label was giving a hard time clearing it, but they didn’t know Baby cleared the record. So the time Baby got it he was like “what the fuck are you doing? It’s Kay Slay clear the record.” It was already too late, I had already turned in the master in so shout out to him, I don’t have no hard feelings because they gave me the record. It was the dickheads at the record label. There was business affairs that was acting silly with Koch but they didn’t tell me that, they believed it was going to happen but by time I got on it, it was a little too late. It is what it is.

CHAMP: One joint that I peeped off the album is the “Men of Respect” joint. I had heard that a while back but it seems like you added some more people on that and it sounds crazier than the one I heard before. What is a joint that you would tell the people to definitely hold their breath for when it comes out on the album?

KAY SLAY: I ain’t going to lie, the whole album is well rounded. There are a lot of good joints on there because there are so many different people from different places. I can’t tell a nigga from the south “yo man you’re going to love Men of Respect” it has Jim Jones, Papoose, Lloyd Banks Tony Yayo and Remy on there. But I will tell a nigga from the south “yo man, you are going to love this joint with Bun-B, Boosie, Webbie and Code Red on the hook.” Different regions are going to like and love different joints. “Men of Respect” the joint was just so hot I just didn’t want to throw it away from the streets, so I made everyone do new verse, added Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo to the joint.

CHAMP: Now the actual date the people can expect it out I heard is going to be the 26th, are we still rocking with that date?

KAY SLAY:  The official date is February 29th 2010. I don’t know if you get MTV Jams out there but the video premiered. The new single “Thug Luv” featuring Maino, Papoose, and Red Café with Ray J on the hook. That is the record that is taking us all the way into the album. Video is crazy, it’s going to start showing on MTV 2 and BET.

CHAMP: We are in the first quarter of 2010 and you are going to be dropping your album first quarter. What else can we expect for the rest of the year from Kay Slay?

KAY SLAY:  For the rest of the year you can look forward to me doing a lot of big events with my magazine Straight Stuntin’. I got a lot of beautiful women, and it’s not just geared towards models. Its whatever a female is doing, weather she is dj’ing, an author, actress, entrepreneur, I try to give the ladies a platform with this magazine the same way that I give the brothers a platform with my radio show, Hot 97 & Sirius XM. Rap is dominated by men at the end of the day it’s a lot of women that do a lot of other things and I just want to give them a platform so that’s what Straight Stuntin’ is all about. I give women the option whether they want the fashion, lingerie, or fully clothed. A lot of them see the money that is being made with the lingerie so they go that route, and you don’t have to it’s not mandatory. So I do a lot of events with that, be on the lookout for a lot of the events with Straight Stuntin’ Magazine.

CHAMP: I would love to see Kay Slay in Toronto this year, is there any way we can make that happen?

KAY SLAY: At the end of the day I am a two time felon, I did a lot of stupid shit when I was younger. So it’s up to one of those promoters to go through the proper channels to the courts to get me that pass to come through and do what I do. On another note I just want to say to everyone whatever is going on in your life just take time out to say a prayer for the brothers and sisters out in Haiti, and if you can make a donation most definitely do that through the Red Cross or any other legitimate fund. At the end of the day the atmosphere is starting to flip out, it’s snowing in Miami, earthquakes in Haiti, no town or country is exempt. This could be you, so just think about out brothers and sisters and they need help right now. So on another note outside of the music just take the time out I don’t care if it’s $1, $2, $5 its goes along way when somebody needs help.
