POKES (Models): KALEMA EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
CHAMP MAGAZINE
Hollywood
CHAMP: What’s goodie Ms.Kalema? What are you up to at the current moment?
KALEMA: Hey Hollywood! Right now, I’m trying to get some photo shoots done before the holidays because I plan to take at least a two week vacation. I’m also in the works of launching my clothing line!! I’m trying to stay busy.
CHAMP: Now a lot of nationalities must be thrown at you when people look at you. What background have you been told you look like and what’s your actual background?
KALEMA: Lol, good question. People always ask, “Are you mixed”? And I tell them, No, I’m just Kalema.
CHAMP: They say it’s wrong to ask a lady her age, but I definitely gotta know how old you are?
KALEMA: I like to say I’m as young as I look and as old as I feel and both of them vary from day to day.
CHAMP: How were you discovered and what was it about modeling that made you say you wanted to do this?
KALEMA: I pretty much discovered myself. And what I mean by that is, to call yourself a ‘Model’ you have to have confidence and not be shy. I wasn’t always confident and til this day, I’m still a bit shy. I was in the U.S. Navy for four years and the last thing I wanted to do was return to the workforce. I’m from Los Angeles and it seems as if everyone is either trying to be an actor or model if not both. I thought to myself; why not get in on the fun! As I began doing photo shoots and getting paid gigs and constantly hearing people tell me I had a good look, I said to myself, Kalema you can do this!
CHAMP: What’s some of the work people can recognize you from?
KALEMA: Current work: Coke Zero Commercial; I’m a Global Wrestling Promotion Diva (http://gwp2009.angelfire.com/kalema.html) and I will be embracing a hair care box soon!
CHAMP: Before the modeling thing what were you doing or what are you still doing?
KALEMA: Before modeling I was in the military, I am currently attending Cal State L.A. to become a Social Worker.
CHAMP: Now I wanna see how caught up you are about the game. What’s your thoughts and views on the Pleasure P molestation allegations?
KALEMA: Wow. I heard about it, but without the details. I hope that it’s just a rumor because I actually listen to Pleasure P’s music and if it’s true he should be treated just like every other criminal and I don’t mean probation and/or community service. Molestation is a serious charge and should not be dealt with lightly.
CHAMP: Got a favorite artist of 2009? If so, who is it and why?
KALEMA: Nipsey Hussle all the way! He is representing L.A. to the fullest and he’s a looker too!!
CHAMP: Name two truths and a lie about yourself.
KALEMA: Truth #1 – I am a difficult person to figure out. Truth #2 – I am the queen of discount shopping. Lie – Me and Jada Pinkett-Smith are sisters.
CHAMP: Now the industry always has some laughs and funny moments on set. Name the funniest moment you’ve had on a set before?
KALEMA: I have so much fun doing what I do, I love to clown around and make people laugh. That’s why I like this business; you can be yourself and have fun all while making money.
CHAMP: Where’s Kalema’s man at? Are you single?
KALEMA: It’s hard having a man in this business. Its best that I stay unspoken for until I feel the time is right.
CHAMP: What’s the idea dude for you?
KALEMA: I’m a good girl (majority of the time) and all good girls like bad guys (Nipsey).
CHAMP: What’s the craziest thing a guy has done for you?
KALEMA: The craziest thing a guy has done was follow me all the way to the airport knowing I was trying to get away from him. I call him, “The Stalker”. I was really scared for my life. I’ll have to tell more about that when I write my book.
CHAMP: What’s the lamest thing a guy has done for you?
KALEMA: I hate lameness, that’s ugly. All lames, please stay away, lol.
CHAMP: How fair is the modeling world to women in the grand scheme of things? Is there any room for growth?
KALEMA: I think the modeling world has its twists and turns. As far as I’m concerned, either you got it or you don’t, plain and simple. I took a long break when I began modeling for almost three or four years and that was due to me not having the tools I needed which was the ambition or the drive. You have to want this when you wake up and when you go to sleep. This time around I’ve partnered up with a teammate and her name is Zarina Star. She is a hairstylist and makeup artist. We help each other build our portfolios. I appreciate her so much. Remember, models have to keep their hair done and be makeup ready for everything and that is costly. There is always room for growth in the modeling business. No one is ever at their maximum capacity.
CHAMP: When can we expect Ms.Kalema to come up to Toronto and party with the CHAMP team?
KALEMA: Is that an invite? Some of my favorite entertainers are from Canada. I can’t wait to party it up as long as y’all know how to give that VIP treatment!
CHAMP: What else can we expect from Kalema?
KALEMA: I’m launching my website, RocknDiva.com, I have a lot of people interested in working with me in ATL, New York and Chicago, so I’ll be getting ready to do a lot of traveling and networking this New Year. I feel like Drake right now, I just wanna be successful!
