CHAMP: We got the homie Joe Budden, what’s going on homie?
Joe Budden: What’s crackin’? Everything is everything over here.
CHAMP: Now of course you were on tour in Canada for the “Rock the Bells” tour, you are always up here it’s like a second home to you. What’s the one thing you love about Canada?
Joe Budden: I love too many different things about Canada. I love the hip hop scene out there, I love the night life over there, I love the ladies over there, so there are too many different things that I love about Canada. Every time I come over there they treat me with the utmost respect, the hospitality is out of this world, and I just really have a good time.
CHAMP: You have been dropping projects every 4 months consistently. How do you compare the feeling of dropping consistently to the feeling of not dropping at all a few years back?
Joe Budden: Not dropping at all when you are a musician and your passionate is not comparable to anything else, it gets frustrating, it’s difficult, and it makes everything else unmanageable when you can’t release music. I love dropping multiple projects in a year, it keeps you busy, it keeps you out of trouble, it keeps money coming in, I just love work. I am really fortunate to have this career and to get paid to do something that I love, not many people are as fortunate, so I just try to take advantage of it.
CHAMP: “The Escape Route” is out and I see the themes you have been doing with the albums you have been dropping. What was the meaning behind this album? And what was the meaning you wanted to provide for the people on this album?
Joe Budden:The album I just put out is called “Escape Route” and again those who are familiar with Joe Budden, what I like to do is I like to put something out for the fans to hold and to listen to until my next project, which is the one I really have been taking a lot of time on. “Escape Route”, I love it, I got my Slaughterhouse family on there, a few of my favorite songs that I have recorded in parts of time are on there. Prior to that, we did the Slaughterhouse album, amazing and I love that project, prior to that it was “Padded Room” it’s just been a real busy year and every project that I have put out has some joints on it that are pretty timeless.
CHAMP: Bringing it back to “Padded Room” on a production level you worked with Blastah Beats, Klasix and many more. Who did you work with on “Escape Route” this time in terms of production?
Joe Budden: My man J. Cardim is on there, and actually an up and coming producer out of New York City named Jared (Jared F.) handled the load of the work, he did the bulk of it and it made for a very unique sound. Musically he got the feeling across that I was looking for, he is also on my new album “The Great Escape” coming out in February. Justice League is on the album, Dj Khaled, is on the album, Emile is on the album, Sean C and LV (Production) is on the album. The production on my next project is unmatched, it’s production that I have never had before and I am really, really excited about it, I’m excited to hear what Joe Budden is going to sound like on such a monstrous sound scale.
CHAMP: One thing that I have been dying to know about “The Padded Room” was the “I Couldn’t Help It”, who you were talking to on that joint? Are we ever going to find out?
Joe Budden: Definitely not.Lol.
CHAMP: Lol.You of course have been appointed the brain child and leader of The Slaughterhouse, and the album I got it and its ridiculous. I definitely feel it needs more credit than it has gotten so far, but recently you guys appeared in “Forever” during Eminems part when his verse comes up which sparked controversy of you guys heading to Shady/Aftermath. What is that whole situation looking like there?
Joe Budden: I will go as far and say we are trying to work it out. Myself and as well as the other members in my group, we have been in this game long enough to know that nothing is ever set in stone until it’s set in stone. I’m sure there are many other aspiring artists out there who have been promised things, or who have been shown dreams before, and they never come Hopefully the Shady deal can get done, it’s something we would like to see done, I’m sure I speak for everybody in Slaughterhouse when I say that we would all like it to get done. I’m sure when it gets done, if and when it gets done, that the media will be kept to date about it. I’m more excited than I have ever been in my career to have such an opportunity, it would be amazing. I think the people at Shady are amazing, I think Eminem is an amazing artist, one of the best to ever pick up a microphone so I mean it’s just an honor for there to even be a rumor out there.
CHAMP: Even the whole “Slaughterhouse”.People are calling that history in hip-hop already, so to even take it further would be something miraculous.
Joe Budden: I hope so.
CHAMP: A long period of time has gone by without the media blowing up anything that you say on your mind, do you feel that lately you have been holding back on what you want to say towards media or on camera and just focus on the music more?
Joe Budden: I just don’t really have anything to say. I think most of the time things I say gets blown out of proportion, but as of late there hasn’t been really anything to discuss, or anything I felt that I needed to say. I think a lot of times some people that are not familiar with me or my music, all they see or hear is whatever the media wants to put out there of Joe Budden. Often times they get the wrong impression of me, so I kind of just want the music to speak for itself, I think I am an impeccable artist, I think I am a top caliber lyricist today and I want to showcase that more and let people get a general idea of me through my music, rather than in the media.
CHAMP: Now one question I have to ask, out of Prodigy, Ransom, Method Man, Raekwon, and Saigon, as an artist which one of them would you say you respect the most artist-wise, and respect their work?
Joe Budden: I respect all of them. I respect anybody who is chasing their dream, and pursuing their dream, or just trying to make a dollar off of something that they love. I am extremely fortunate, and I consider myself to be and I am sure everybody in the world would want to do, so I respect them all for that.
CHAMP: What else do you have in store for 2010, of course we are closing out the 4th quarter of 09’ what else can we expect from Joe Budden?
Joe Budden: I’m sure I will put out another 5 albums (chuckles). Its funny some people were not around during the time I was out and doing all these shows. I just was not able to release music at all at one point, and now I put out a project in one month and 2 months later people say “come on we need another project.” It is hard work but like I said “The Great Escape” album, this could possibly be the best Joe Budden album ever. That will be out in 2010, we should see a second Slaughterhouse album in 2010, I’m sure I will put out a mixtape or a digital only album, I’m sure I will do something of the sort in 2010. Like I said I just want to say busy and continue to give the fans music that they can enjoy and appreciate.
