BEHIND THE BOARDS: PRODUCER PHOENIX INTERVIEW (PRODUCER OF 50 CENT’S “FLIGHT 187″)

BEHIND THE BOARDS: PRODUCER PHOENIX INTERVIEW (PRODUCER OF 50 CENT’S “FLIGHT 187″)

PHOENIX EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
CHAMP MAGAZINE
Hollywood

CHAMP: What’s going on Phoenix?

Phoenix: Just riding hard.

CHAMP: Ok so in case people don’t know who Phoenix is of course he’s a producer. Now what attracted me to you was the production that you did on Flight 187 with 50 cent. How long have you been producing for?

Phoenix: I have been making beats about six seven years and really only started focus on the mass production for 4 years now.

CHAMP: In terms of music in general who were some of your influences growing up?

Phoenix: I really hate answering that question because my influences come from every genre, every era you know from Justin Timberlake, to Timberland to Cold Play. I  don’t discriminate when it comes to music man. Music inspires me.

CHAMP: So basically music in general is your influence, it’s not just one specific genre or person.

Phoenix: Not at all.

CHAMP: Now what was the first beat or sign that made you want to make beats or say this is something that I want to do?

Phoenix: It was probably like some early Wu-tang record I don’t remember what it was, but I just remember listening to radio and really picking it apart saying “they should of done this different, should have done that” and that I guess that’s like the approach to being a good producer, knowing what can make a record better you know not just necessarily pushing the keys all the time but just crafting songs.

CHAMP: Definitely and where are you hailing out of?

Phoenix: I’m from New York City, BX Borough

CHAMP: That’s what’s up! Now like I said at the top of the interview I got introduced to you from the “Flight 187″ joint. How did that joint get into 50’s hands?

Phoenix: That’s good management. Shout out to my manager Steph. When you have a good team around you, nice connects. I sat down originally just thinking “I’m gonna make a joint for 50 cent” and hooked it up got into a team and made it happen

CHAMP: And then when you found out he not only selected the joint but actually made a video to it what was your reaction to that?

Phoenix: My reaction was I was jumping up and down going crazy for a while

CHAMP: No doubt. Now I peeped some more of your production and realized just like your influences you don’t cater to just one sound, you have different sounds in terms of your production. In terms of the crafting of your beats are you sample heavy or do you like to be more original base

Phoenix: I’m definitely more original base, but you know if I find a good sample (I’m always digging), I’m definitely going to make the best of it but the best of both worlds sample and compose it’s always a beautiful thing. Like with the “Flight 187″ track, it’s not a full sample. That has some composition on there too.

CHAMP: Who are some other artists you have produced for in the past?

Phoenix: Hot Rod from G-unit, Tony Yayo, we got a record out not with O’Neil McKnight and Too Short, Jeremy Greene, who signed to MySpace records. That’s pretty much the list right now but we working hard going to expand that list and give people a lot of good music

CHAMP: And who are some of the artist you are working with at the moment?

Phoenix: Right now I’m just in the lab cooking up some stuff trying to get on with Jeezy hopefully, Soulja boy, I’m trying to get some Drake placements…That’s a must.

CHAMP: Now in terms of your beat making how often or how many beats do you make a day?

Phoenix: I try to bang out at least 1 a day. You know with the day job and stuff but on the weekends definitely about 3 you know just really go in.

CHAMP: What are some of the tools we can catch Phoenix using when he’s crafting a beat?

Phoenix: Well shout out to my Fruit Loops Studio users cause I’m definitely putting the team on. People are  always shocked when I say that, but it’s not what you use it’s how you use it.I got the Phantom virus on deck and a lot of other little goodies…look it up.

CHAMP: Definitely. Now the name “Phoenix” what’s the story behind that?

Phoenix: Nah no real story it just sounded good. My friends always used to call me that it stuck with me so I just rolled with it

CHAMP: Now you’re in a group called The Sound Killers. If you could explain that to the people and what can we expect from you guys?

Phoenix: You can expect just great music, powerful music, trend setting music. It consists of myself, the big homie Reo you might of heard him on Beonyce’s last project he did “Hello”. Got big homie Dion Primo he also wrote the record for O Neal McKnight ft Too Short, “Throw It Back” so you know just a lot of good talented people putting together some classic records.

CHAMP: You guys are looking like the 3 headed monster.

Phoenix: Yes sir!

CHAMP: No doubt. Now of course the local artist up here would like to definitely get their hands on a Phoenix beat. Now are you someone who can send out some affordable beats or is it something that will hurt a man’s pockets?

Phoenix: Na I always keep something for every budget I’m always willing to work with talented people so if you want to get at me get me on www.Twitter.com/PhoenixSays, hit me up on www.myspace.com/phoenixsays, check me on www.soundclick.com/PhoenixProductions if you want to check out some beats you know its nothing’ we got beats and hooks too we can even give you full songs.

CHAMP: Defiantly now of course you have been doing this for quite some time. What would you say are one “Do’s” and one “don’t” of producin

Phoenix: One “Do”? Do you don’t follow the trends. By the time you get that placement that trend could have come and gone so you gotta find your sound find your sound and just do that.
