SelfMade Exclusive Interview

DJ Laz Vagez
CHAMP MAGAZINE

CHAMP: It’s your boy Dj Laz Vegas and I’m kicking it with Mr. Young and Fly himself “SelfMade”. What’s popping in A.C man?

SELFMADE: Pimps, hoes, and high rollers. That’s all we know bra.

CHAMP: No doubt, no doubt. Now tell me about the origin of your name SelfMade.

SELFMADE: I go by SelfMade because I worked for everything I got, nobody gave me nothing.

CHAMP: Now reading your bio you seem to be the jack-of-all-trades! You produce, engineer, shoot, and edit videos. What made you want to wear so many hats?

SELFMADE: I always rapped but in today’s industry it’s better to know how to do several things so I can be a viable asset to someone’s company.

CHAMP: Now you said your based out of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Where are you originally from?

SELFMADE: I was born in PG County Maryland but moved to A.C at the age of one.

CHAMP: Can you tell me a bit of your upbringing?

SELFMADE: I grew up in a single parent home in the slums with one older sister. Our mother raised us the best way she knew how. I saw a lot at a young age, which corrupted my youth. After a few run ins with the law I decided to pursue music full time.

CHAMP: Listening to your music makes me wonder a bit. Thinking about New Jersey and me being from Toronto, off the bat I think of Newark, Patterson, Brick City and rappers like Redman, Joe Budden, Ransom and Mu Dills. Who are your influences and what is your take on those artists?

SELFMADE: My aunt and uncle who were in a rap group back in the day influenced me. Redman and Naughty By Nature taught me its not where your from its all about your talent.

CHAMP: Being based out of Atlantic City, a city known for Casinos tell me what are you doing or about to do to bring the city in to the Hip Hop/Rap radar?

SELFMADE: I’m relentlessly going to drop mixtape after mixtape and throw show after show until the buzz I is so big people will want to come to AC to experience SelfMade and not for the casinos.

CHAMP: No doubt, I just saw the video “Who Dat Boy”. You definitely look like you have a strong support. Tell me about your first CD Y.B.R (Young, Black and Rich).

SELFMADE: Y.B.R is one side of my personality. I like to make feel good music that you can dance to and relate to. So I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it.

CHAMP: You’re working on “Casino City” now. Tell me what you this is different as opposed to the material from the previous CD to this brand new joint you’re working on.

SELFMADE: Casino City is an exclusive inside look behind the glitz and glamour of the casino life. This CD is the other side of my personality. Parental discretion is advised.

CHAMP: No doubt man. Now who do we got featured on this new CD and tell me about some of the artists you have worked with whether its producing or rapping.

SELFMADE: There is a small collection of local artists I have featured on this CD including DJ Eeaazzee, A-R Chetto and Kodak. I have worked with everyone from singers to rappers to poets.

CHAMP: Cool man. I hope I get out to Atlantic City to get with some chicks man. You need to come to Toronto and holla at the girls here. * laughs *

SELFMADE: As tempting as that may sound, I am happily married but we do have some beautiful women down here so I got you whenever you come through.

CHAMP: You already know. Do you have any final words and shout outs you want to give?

SELFMADE: Yeah. I want to give a shout out to Now or Neva Entertainment, DJ Eeaazzee, A-R Chetto, Montego, Kodak, Die-Hard, all my fans, and whoever supports the movement.
